DOCUMENTARY

INTO THE WIDE WORLD
A baby chicken pecks through her eggshell and steps out of the henhouse. She looks at her new surroundings, discovers, examines, and wonders. How is the world organized? From the chicken farm the film moves out, tracing the phenomena of light, gravity, and wind. The forces and laws of nature and biology have a special poetry all their own.

Script with space researcher Ib Lundgaard
Cinematography: Peter Klitgaard, Fritz Schrøder
Musik: Hans-Erik Philip

Jury's Special Award, Holbæk 1986

LIFE IS A DREAM
A young woman, Rikke, is in a locked ward in a mental hospital. She shows her personal and intimate belongings. A lipstick, an eye shadow, a deodorant, a bra. This is her way of orienting herself and finding herself. She has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. What is it like to be a schizophrenic? How does she experience the world? Four psychotic persons tell their stories. They are very different from each other, but have a deep pain in common.

MAN AGAINST HORSE
On a given day in July, the wild horses of the mountains of Galicia in Spain are driven down into the arena of the village. The young men force the horses to the ground with their bare hands. It's a risky sport, a test of manhood, one of the necessary rituals of life. The old horsefighter Jaime cannot be in the fight any more, but he is still in the arena giving advice to the young ones from the experiences of a lifetime. Roi, the young horsefighter in action, doesn't want to listen. A film without words, told only in images, sounds and music.

From his holiday house in the woods on the Danish island of Møn, Günter Grass, the German author, tells the story of his relation to Denmark and Hans Christian Andersen. Grass recently illustrated Andersen's fairytales. Both of them are fairytale-tellers, although very different. Grass loves going mushroom-picking in the fairy woods around his house.

SUPERTANKER
A Norwegian supertanker on the last lap of its voyage from the Arabian Gulf to Europe passes through the Bay of Biscay, past Norwegian lobster fishermen off the Brittany coast, and 12 km up the French river Loire. The enormous length and weight of the ship, combined with the high tide and dense fog over the river makes navigation difficult and risky. The captain is under heavy pressure. The risk, of course, is another environmental catastrophe.

Cinematography: Peter Klitgaard
Music: Edvard Grieg, Charlie McCoy

CHINA IN DENMARK
A small Danish town is democratically organized with a high degree of participation, and a well-developed community network. People are much more sociable than they ever were in a Danish town. It's just like in a Chinese Maoist town as imagined and envisioned through "naive" Danish eyes in the 1970's. Fictitious documentary, a 'construction' from one end to the other, ironic, equivocal.

Script: Kristen Bjørnkjær, Franz Ernst
Cinematography: Claus Loof
Music: Fuzzy
Ebbe Preisler Film, Statens Filmcentral 1971

A COLLEGE DIARY 1969
Life at the folk colleges Vallekilde and Krogerup is strongly influenced by the youth rebels of 1968. The pupils want to decide for themselves what to learn and how to learn it. WHO DO YOU BELONG TO?
Alice, a 15 year-old, lives in an orphanage because her parents are not able to cope with the responsibility of her upbringing. An orphanage is very different from an ordinary family home, but the basic questions are the same for any teenage girl. How to become an independent, grown-up person? How to be able to cope with life? Well, who really IS able, when it comes down to it?

Cinematography: Lennart Steen
